10 Dental Care Tips for Moms (and Moms-To-Be)

By Guapologa 10/06/2016

Don’t follow my example on this one. Better put these tips to werk for your smile.

CLOSED GIVEAWAY [FYI: You may want to scroll down for a chance to get a $275 value gift card for a dental service in LA area]

Right now, I am noticing I am overdue four months for my follow up dentist appointment. FOUR MONTHS where I have been chewing with a temporary fix on one of my molars. It doesn’t hurt, but I know it can fail at any moment now, and still haven’t call the dentist office yet. Not a good example to follow but, still, my doctor likes me and he shared these ten tips for better dental health that should be enforced to all the moms out there. I thought I should share them with you.

In his experience, he says he understand that busy moms don’t always believe they have the time to take great care of their teeth. But it shouldn’t be that way. By giving your teeth the attention they need – just like you do for your family – you can help preserve your smile for decades.toothbrush

1. Brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes – You need all of that time to thoroughly remove plaque!

2. Brush properly – Brush too hard and you might hurt your gums. Brush too soft and you will just be giving your gums and plaque a nice relaxing massage. Use the recommended tooth brush size for your mouth and the right softness or hardness of the bristles for your needs. Your dentist can help yo on that one.

If you are shopping for a child, select a toothbrush with the following characteristics:

  • Soft bristles (for gentle cleaning)
  • Very small heads (designed for baby teeth)
  • Large handles (easier for children to grip)

3. Floss every day – This is the best way to remove plaque and prevent cavities from forming between teeth. Moms- to- be are more prone to develop gingivitis during the pregnancy, which can lead to tooth loose if not taken care properly. Keep gently flossing  your teeth even if your gums bleed without freak out, but an accurate diagnose and tailored solutions are always available at your dentist practice. Go visit her!

4. Load up on fruits & veggies – Sweets promote tooth decay and gum disease. But fresh fruits and veggies are great for your overall health and your teeth!

5. Bust a move – Diet and exercise may help prevent periodontal disease, according to the Journal of Periodontology. Who knew?

6. Take time to de-stress – Stress can lead to teeth grinding, cause TMJ and trigger canker sore and cold sore outbreaks. Try yoga, meditation or other relaxation techniques to take the edge off.

7. Visit your dentist – You wouldn’t let your kids miss a dentist appointment, so why should you? If you’re pregnant, it’s important to continue with regular dental exams.

8. Be model mom – Your kids look up to you. Dentists know that mothers who make dental health a priority in their own lives set a good example for their kids. I’m super strict with dental hygiene with Mini, and the only way that I have found my «enforcement» work is when she sees me taking care of my denture when telling her to do so too.

9. Replace your toothbrush (or toothbrush head for a powered toothbrush) as soon as the bristles begin to look worn or frayed (usually every three months). A worn toothbrush does not do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Remember always to replace your toothbrush after an illness.

10. Powered toothbrushes don’t clean teeth any better than regular toothbrushes. However, if a powered toothbrush motivates you to clean your teeth more often and for the required length of time, it is worth the investment. Powered toothbrushes are better choices than manual toothbrushes for anyone who needs assistance brushing teeth, including people with arthritis (or any condition that may limit mobility), anyone wearing braces or people with misaligned or uneven teeth surfaces that make a thorough cleaning more challenging.

I am sure these pieces of advise might not sound breaking new, but it is always a good time to remind ourselves that the only way to smile properly is having a healthy denture to share with our beloved ones.

PS: If you live in Los Angeles area, I have two gift cards to be used by new patients at any of the A New Smile Dental Group. Check locations here. I will be giving them away by rafflecopter.
