Because we already gave thanks and got carried away on Black Friday.
We also supported small business on Saturday (right?) and took advantage of Cyber Monday already. It is time to be part of something bigger on Giving Tuesday.
In case you have no idea what I am talking about, here is the explanation: Giving Tuesday is a day when people around the world -but especially in America- donate to the causes they care about most.
This year, even Facebook has an event where they will match donations made through their platform.
But I want to share with you some of my favorite do-good institutions and services, just in case you feel you need a bit of inspiration to really give a bit of the good you have to people who need it desperately.
Click on the IG images to get to their accounts on that platform and learn more about the mission and focus of each of these great non-profit organizations.
Kiva.
5 years ago, I started supporting people around the world through Kiva. And I love to learn how a seemingly small amount like $5 or $10 makes such a difference in struggling communities.
This organization helps all kinds of people around the world borrow a small amount of money from several borrowers (like me). They should have a project and a plan to pay the money back to the borrowers through Kiva, while the organization helps them make their business work. You can keep lending the money you get paid back to other projects or donate it for Kiva’s operation costs.
The Lipstick Lobby.
I truly love this organization’s spirit: «Protest with a #boldlip». 100% of their lipstick products are donated to different projects and organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, ACLU, Unprision Project, and the Brady Center.
If that is not great itself, you also get to wear amazing lipstick colors and make a statement with your makeup. It is a lovely way of making a difference.
Families Belong Together.
I can’t even start talking about what is going on in the Southern border without getting emotional. This organization work is focused on family reunification, and they created a coloring book to support their efforts: Coloring without borders. Learn more about the illustrations directly in the book’s IG account.
Heifer International.
Heifer has a very specific way of work: They help provide people in struggling situations livestock as a way of helping them get out of poverty and become self-reliant. I learned about them a few years ago via #Weallgrow Latina, and I am still into buying the goods they sell in order to support their work around the world.
Fundación Teletón México/ Teleton USA.
For years, Fundación Teletón has built and maintained children’s rehabilitation centers around Mexico. These centers are also known as «CRIT» in Spanish («Centro de reahabilitación infantil Teletón»). CRIT celebrates the dignity of every individual serving children with neurological, muscular and skeletal disabilities and their families. CRIT is an integrated, state-of-the-art rehabilitation program that empowers patients to reach their full potential with inclusion to society.
Nowadays, Fundación Teletón also has an oncology hospital, an autism center, and their own school for doctors and rehabilitation technicians in Mexico. They also were able to open the first CRIT in the US. CRIT-USA is located in a colorful and welcoming 45,000 square foot building in San Antonio, Texas. It prides itself on having some of the most advanced equipment and therapy rooms for the rehabilitative care of children with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.
Although there are donations from corporations, the CRIT centers rely on donations of regular people, and every year it becomes a big deal to reach their monetary goal. My daughter is a big fan of this cause and she is actively involved in it. You can donate in pesos or dollars before or during their big fundraising event on December 8th.
These are my top five organizations to donate on Giving Tuesday and/or on any other day or season. Any amount helps people in ways we can’t even imagine.
You will be truly being the change you want to see in the world.
